Our Story.

The Ray Scott Group is a private family-owned and operated group of companies comprising of a variety of business entities that operate nationally in several different business sectors ranging from Pastoral businesses, General and Livestock Transport, Commercial and Industrial Property Investments and other significant commercial interests/partnerships. Ray Scott had over 45 years of experience in business, with a history of solid growth, achievement and performance.

The group employs over 50 people nationally, whilst also utilizing the services of several contractors across a broad range of industries. The Ray Scott Group is a major contributor to the local economies of the regions in which it operates and has a strong commitment to supporting business at a local level as well as nurturing and fostering relationships with many national stakeholders across its diverse range of commercial activities.

The groups head office is in Mount Gambier, which houses the admin, managerial and internal accounting staff. The rear of the premises offers a substantial yard and production facility with an enormous capacity for all in house manufacturing requirements, from farm gates, cattle ramps, stock crates and trailers.

Raymond Scott.

Raymond Walter Scott was born the third child to Margaret and Alan on the 5th of May 1950 in Strathalbyn. At 2 years old, Ray’s family moved to Mount Gambier where his parents established the well-known Scott’s transport.

Ray’s education in transport began early and he could remember as a 5-year-old being under the stock truck holding boards to be secured.

After schooling at Scotch College, he returned home and started driving a truck at 17. His first truck was an AEC tray truck moving stock before moving to Adelaide carting fuel to Port Stanvac.

The family transport business expanded to Ascot Haulage in Darwin and Alice Springs where Ray was sent up to cart fuel. His time working there led to a lifelong affinity with the Territory.

Returning to Mount Gambier, Ray worked for Lake City Freighters, briefly for K and S then back to Scott’s Transport. The blue of Scott’s Transport trucks was actually inspired by the Neptune Blue of Ray’s F100 ute. Ray Scott Transport still proudly carries these colours to this day.

1973, Ray met Jill and they married in 1974. In 1976, Ray and Jill welcomed their first child Ashley, followed by daughters Prue in 1978 and Libby in 1982.

In the early 80’s, Ray began his own livestock transport business which he ran from the Scott’s depot. He then returned to work for his father at Scott’s Transport. The Scott empire expanded when Allan bought Fairfield station in Queensland and Ray’s love of the outback began. In the last 10 years of his life, Ray bought other properties in Queensland and his happiest times were spent in his Western Star truck with his faithful dog Effie riding shotgun.

Both Ray and his father loved Mount Gambier and kept their businesses here, employing countless locals. Even now Mount Gambier is sign-written on top of the trucks. Ray was very generous toward his community from sporting clubs and charities to personal donations. For his whole working life Ray was proud to have clean, tidy, well-maintained trucks and driver safety was his main priority.

After the passing of Ray’s father, Allan, in 2008 Ray established The Ray Scott Group comprising of Transport, Pastoral and Commercial Interests.

In 2013 Ray was the first icon inducted into the Truckers Hall of Fame and he can boast that he drove for 53 years without a crash.

In 2021 Ray was posthumously awarded the Australian Medal for contributions to the transport industry.
Rays had a lifelong love of motorsport, with hot rods and go karts in his youth, at 47 he took up sprint car racing, he loved the challenge and comradery and met some life-long friends.

There wasn’t a machine Ray couldn’t drive, car, truck, bull dozer, grader, forklift, go kart, hot rod, sprint car, plane, helicopter.

Ray’s life touched so many people. He always offered to lend an ear and offer words of wisdom. He seemed to find the right words in times of need or get you back on track. A hard-working man, he was generous, kind, funny, always genuine and is truly missed.
